International Guest Lecture: Bringing Culture into English Language Teaching with Dr. Tanya Kwee from UNSW Sydney

Bengkulu — How can English teachers create learning experiences that are not only effective but also meaningful and responsive to learners’ diverse cultural backgrounds?

The Master’s Program in English Language Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Bengkulu, invites English teachers, practitioners, alumni, students, lecturers, and the wider ELT community to join an International Guest Lecture featuring Dr. Tanya Kwee from UNSW Sydney, Australia.

With the theme “Teacher Professional Development for Culturally Responsive English Language Teaching,” this guest lecture will provide an opportunity to explore how teacher professional development can contribute to more culturally responsive English language teaching in increasingly diverse educational contexts.

The theme has been specifically selected to support the scientific vision of the Master’s Program in English Language Education, particularly its commitment to advancing English language education that is research-based, technology-enhanced, culturally responsive, excellent, and internationally competitive. By bringing cultural responsiveness into the discussion of teacher professional development, the event connects international perspectives with the realities and diversity of English language education in Indonesia.

Through this session, participants will have the opportunity to broaden their perspectives on the relationship between teacher professional development, culture, and English language pedagogy, while reflecting on how teachers can recognize learners’ cultural backgrounds and incorporate culturally meaningful perspectives into their teaching practices.

The presence of an international scholar from UNSW Sydney also reflects the Program’s continuing efforts to strengthen international academic engagement and provide students, alumni, teachers, and lecturers with opportunities to engage with global perspectives and current developments in English language education.
